Meet Basie — Leader of the Band
Named for Count Basie, the "King of Swing" himself and one of the two most influential bandleaders in jazz history, right alongside Duke Ellington.
Current weight (~12 weeks): 9 lb · Expected mature size: approximately 20–25 lb (like his dam Fifi) · Coat: wavy golden apricot with white diamond markings · Temperament: active, confident, needs a job
And this guy earns the title. Simply put — he's gorgeous. Golden, wavy coat, quiet and soulful eyes, with striking white diamond-shaped markings passed down from his mom. He carries a smaller, perfectly square frame, and he moves through the world with an easy, understated confidence — proud and playful, never pushy or aggressive. He doesn't need to raise his voice to lead the room; he just does.
Basie is not a couch dog. He needs an active home with real physical and mental outlets — an owner who wants a dog for hikes, agility, scent work, training sports, or long daily adventures. Placed in the right home, he will thrive. Placed in a low-key household, he will get bored, and that won't be fair to anyone. He has maintained an excellent growth trajectory throughout the litter's monthly weigh-ins.
That combination of exceptional structure and calm, commanding presence is exactly why he's too valuable to place as just any pet — we're looking for the right guardian home or breeding partner to keep his line going strong. Just like his namesake led one of the greatest bands in jazz history without ever overplaying his hand, this boy leads with quiet swagger, wherever he ends up.
Puppy Application
Oh boy! This one is hard to let go. He's got the confirmation, color, coat, temperament, and size (likely mini) we breed for — exactly what we want carrying the bloodline forward.
We're not set up to keep a male ourselves, so Basie is being placed by private treaty in one of two ways: a guardian home, where he lives as your beloved pet and we retain breeding rights on terms we work out with you privately, or a breeder-to-breeder placement with a program running unrelated lines that complement ours. Selah covers his full health and genetic testing. If either path sounds like a fit, let's have a conversation.
Our Story
Selah Doodles began more than a decade ago when our first Australian Labradoodle, Tegan Park’s Monarch, came home from one of the original development kennels that helped shape this remarkable breed. That experience set the standard for what we believe an Australian Labradoodle should be: healthy, intuitive, biddable, and truly part of the family.
After stepping away from breeding for several years, we are relaunching Selah Doodles with Ophelia of Barksdale Labradoodles and future breeding dogs from established Tegan Park and Rutland Manor-based lines, focusing on a small number of carefully planned litters each year.
*The name Selah reminds us to pause on purpose—to rest, reflect, and enjoy the moment—so at Selah Doodles we like to say we create ‘intentional paws’ in busy lives, one gentle, joyful set of paws at a time.
